An IODP Mission Specific Platform Expedition Organised by the ECORD Science Operator

Offshore: Spring-Summer 2013; Onshore: Fall 2013

Application Deadline: April 30, 2012

Background: The Baltic Sea Basin is one of the world’s largest intra-continental basins, occupying 373,000 km2 and with a drainage area four times its size, and has served as depositional sink throughout at least the last several hundred thousand years. Its sediments comprise a unique high-resolution archive of the paleoenvironmental history of the huge drainage area, the basin itself and neighboring sea areas.

Objectives: The Baltic Sea Basin proposal addresses four over-arching themes:

Climate and sea level dynamics of MIS 5, including onsets and terminations

The complexities of the last glacial, MIS 4 – MIS 2

Deglacial and Holocene (MIS 2 – MIS 1) climate forcing

Deep biosphere responses to glacial-interglacial cycles

Specialists in the following fields are required: sedimentology, microbiology, organic geochemistry, inorganic geochemistry, benthic foraminifera, planktonic foraminifera, diatoms, ostracodes, dinoflagellates, terrestrial palynology, petrophysics/logging, stratigraphic correlation, and paleomagnetics.

Application Process: Scientists interested in participating please consult the ESSAC webpage.
Required documents (PDF only) are:

CV

Letter of interest including your specific expertise, previous involvement in DSDP/ODP/IODP expeditions, research interest

Publication list

Young researchers must additionally provide a letter of support from their host institution including information on the post-cruise science support: How to achieve the proposed scientific objectives in the future (funding scheme and support from host institution).

We request that all candidates send a copy of their application to the IODP-Canada office (coordinator@mail.iodpcanada.ca). If you wish to receive feedback or assistance, please send your documents at least one week prior to the deadline.

Application Deadline: December 15, 2011

Expedition Goals: The expedition goal is to deepen Hole C0002F to ~3300 mbsf, This riser hole, intended to access the plate boundary faults at an ultimate depth of 7000 meters, has already been drilled and cased to 856 mbsf during IODP Expedition 326.

Scientific Objectives: The main objective is to sample the deep interior of the accretionary complex in the midslope region beneath the Kumano forearc basin; using both core samples and drill cuttings, to perform downhole stress orientation/magnitude, pore pressure, permeability, and collect an extensive suite of LWD and wireline logs to characterize the formation, including a planned zero-offset vertical seismic profile. This is a major part of the long-term effort to drill a deep riser hole into the plate boundary fault system.

Application Deadline: November 18, 2011

Expedition Goals: The expedition goal is to drill ~1000 mbsf into the fault zone of the Tohoku Earthquake (~7000 mbsl), collect core and LWD data, and emplace a “CORK”-type observatory.

Scientific Objectives:

(1) What was the stress state on the fault that controls rupture during the earthquake and was the stress completely released? Time decaying temperature measurements will be used to estimate the frictional heat produced at the time of the earthquake, which can be used to infer the level of dynamic friction. Rupture to the toe of accretionary wedge; measurements of current stress and stress during the earthquake can be used to explore different models to explain how dynamic slip occurred.

(2) What are the characteristics of large earthquakes in the fault zone, and how can we distinguish present and past events in fault zone cores? Evidence of melting and other processes that contribute to dynamic strength reduction will be looked for in core samples. Trace elements will be used to estimate the thermal history of the recent and past events. High-speed friction and petrophysical experiments on fault material can be used to characterize the frictional behaviour of the fault.

Application Deadline: December 2, 2011

Expedition 337, postponed due to the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in March 2011, has been rescheduled for Summer 2012. There are five spots available; applications from sedimentologists, microbiologists/biogeochemists, and micropaleontologists are particularly encouraged.

Scientific Objectives:

The objective of this expedition is to deepen a hole and recover core samples down to the target Eocene lignite coalbed. The core samples will be used to investigate geological, geophysical, (bio-)geochemical and (geo-)microbiological features of the formation, with a view to expand our knowledge on coalbed subseafloor hydrocarbon system and the deep biosphere.Particular focus will be made on deep subseafloor life and the biosphere down to 2200 mbsf, in a habitat that has never been reached by previous scientific ocean drilling. We will investigate active microbial communities and geobiological processes in the thermally immature coalbed at great burial depths.
