Distinguished Lecturer Program
The Distinguished Lecturer Program is a lecture series sponsored by the European Consortium for Ocean Research Drilling (ECORD), which is designed to bring the exciting scientific discoveries of the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) to the geosciences community.
Three Distinguished Lecturers per series are selected, from each of the three main thematic areas of IODP research. The 2010-2012 lecturers are:

Kai-Uwe Hinrichs, MARUM, University of Bremen:
"Benthic archaea - the unseen majority with importance to the global carbon cycle revealed by IODP drilling"

Dominique Weis, PCIGR, University of British Columbia:
"What do we know about mantle plumes and what more can we learn by IODP drilling?"

Helmut Weissert, ETH, Zurich:
"Carbon cycle, oceans and climate in the Cretaceous: lessons from Ocean Drilling (DSDP to IODP) and from records on continents"
APPLICATION
Applications to host a Distinguished Lecturer are accepted from any college, university or non-profit organisation in all European countries and Canada.
Apply via email to iact_essac.office@iact.ugr-csic.es, name your priority lecturer and include the name, address, telephone number and email address of a contact person. Please coordinate your application with other members of your department, and be sure to list more than one choice of speaker (1st, 2nd, optionally 3rd choice) — this provides more flexibility in scheduling and increases your institution’s chance of hosting a lecture. The ESSAC Office and/or resp. Distinguished Lecturer will then liaise directly with you to decide a suitable date and help determine the best pairing of speaker and institution.
ECORD funding will cover the speaker’s transportation expenses; host institutions are asked in turn to provide local transportation, housing, and meals for the speaker. Only one lecture per institution will be funded. You will be asked to complete a request form after the hosting.
The 2010/2012 DLP runs until spring 2012.
