The science plan addresses pressing scientific, economic and societal priorities within four themes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Climate and Ocean Change<\/li><li>Biosphere Frontiers<\/li><li>Earth Connections<\/li><li>Earth in Motion<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The scientific goals of the science plan require access to two permanent drilling vessels and the option to charter mission-specific platforms for operations in specialized ocean environments:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>the <em>JOIDES Resolution<\/em>, a riserless drilling vessel managed by the <a href=\"http:\/\/iodp.tamu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">United States Implementing Organization<\/a> (USIO)<\/li><li>the <em>Chikyu<\/em>, a riser drilling vessel managed by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jamstec.go.jp\/chikyu\/e\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology<\/a> (JAMSTEC)<\/li><li>Mission Specific Platforms managed by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eso.ecord.org\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ECORD Science Operator<\/a> (ESO)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210920132849im_\/http:\/\/www.iodpcanada.ca\/images\/platforms.jpg\/@@images\/dc7ae4ff-3adf-4ad3-afd3-1184745fc54d.jpeg\" alt=\"\" title=\"platforms.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"parent-fieldname-title\">IODP (2003-2013)<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Integrated Ocean Drilling Program<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) was a ten-year (2003-2013) international partnership to explore Earth\u2019s history, structure, chemistry, and dynamics as recorded in seafloor sediments and rocks. It arose from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.deepseadrilling.org\/about.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Deep Sea Drilling Project<\/a> (DSDP, 1968-1983) and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www-odp.tamu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ocean Drilling Program<\/a> (ODP, 1985-2003), which revolutionized our view of the Earth and were among the most successful international science programs ever conducted.
